2016 BAN PEN LAO ZHAI Pu erh cake (raw)
China - BuLang Shan mountain, Xishuangbanna county, Yunnan province
From Ban Pen, a neighbouring village to Lao Ban Zhang, this delightful small tea cake is rich in flavour with a long lasting smooth aftertaste. The intensity of the aftertaste is due to the mineral content of the tea leaves. Since ancient times the old leaves are left on the trees to allow the nutrients to go back into the tree. Usually tea produced from ancient trees grown at high altitudes is of a much better quality and taste.
This cake was produced from two leaves and a bud, hand picked from 300 year old wild arbour trees in the ancient tea forests of Bulan mountain at altitudes of between 1600 - 1900 metres. Free from pesticides and fertilisers, the rich soil and sub-tropical climate with abundant rainfall produce tea of exceptional quality.
Produced in the traditional way, the picked leaves are air dried, pan fried, steamed and then pressed in stone moulds. This Ban Pen tea is similar to Lao Ban Zhang teas in appearance but it has its own unique smooth taste.
A most fabulous tasting tea.
